Votes Needed To Calm Traffic

WESTCHASE - Residents affected by the traffic calming proposal on Countryway Boulevard have been given 30 more days to approve or reject the solutions.

The new deadline to return the ballots is 5 p.m. Nov. 10.

'We had sent out ballots and given them until Oct. 10, but due to apathy,' the deadline has been extended, said Robert Wood of the county Public Works Department.

Village representatives of the residences involved contacted Wood to tell him they were concerned about the slow response, Wood said. He gave them 30 more days and told the representatives to contact homeowners to encourage them to vote. Two hundred thirty-nine residents live in the affected area.

In 2004, 10 residents wrote to the county and expressed concerns about speeding on Countryway Boulevard, Wood said. Several meetings followed, and during the most recent meeting, held in April, the public was informed of the proposed traffic calming devices selected and where they would likely be placed if approved by residents.
Traffic calming devices range from speed humps to speed feedback signs.

Three areas are affected by the proposal, and three areas have the opportunity to vote. Area one includes 30 homes on Woodbay Drive and residents on Glencliff Circle, Rockport Place and Seabrook Drive; area two includes residents on Peabody Lane and part of Marblehead Drive and Clear Harbor Drive; and area three includes residents on Ashville Drive, Keswick Place and Chambers Drive.

Sixty percent approval for each ballot area is required. Wood said area three has achieved 60 percent approval to install a raised intersection at Countryway and Ashville. Area one has 38 percent approval to install a raised intersection at Glencliff and Countryway and a raised crosswalk at the trail south of Glencliff, and area two has a 37 percent approval to install a raised intersection at Countryway and Peabody.
