KEYSTONE - On Saturday morning residents will hit Gunn Highway with garbage bags in hand as part of the county's Adopt-A-Road program.
From 8 to 11 a.m., they will clean up a two-mile stretch of Gunn Highway from Van Dyke Road south to Tarpon Springs Road. The Keystone Civic Association will host the cleanup.
'We're excited to see what treasures we get,' said Keystone resident and association board member Barbara Dowling. 'I still have an old plastic flamingo from last year.'
The association hosts four cleanups a year. Two of them, the Florida Coastal Cleanup in September and the Great American Cleanup in April, are associated with the Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful program, which has a mission to prevent litter, promote recycling and conservation, and clean up and beautify the county.
More than 7,000 people participated in volunteer programs sponsored by the county beautification program during the past year.
Greg Riski has been partaking in the highway cleanups since moving to Keystone 11 years ago. He has been running the association's program the past four years.
'We do it early to avoid the heat and traffic congestion,' he said. Children younger than 12 are kept off Gunn Highway and are asked to come with a parent.
Volunteers will meet at the Keystone Community Center, 17928 Gunn Hwy., at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. For information or to volunteer, contact Greg Riski at (813) 920-5561.
