TOWN 'N COUNTRY - Anglers wanted.
The Third Annual Bay Crest Summertime Slam is taking place Saturday and Tom Devny, president of the event, is looking for more fishermen and fisherwomen to participate in the fun.
Those interested in the tournament must register by 5 p.m. Thursday, Devney said. There is a $125 fee per boat, and each boat can have a maximum of four anglers.
The fee covers a T-shirt, post party beer and food for anglers, entry in a drawing, and entry to fish.
'I would describe it as a fun-based neighborhood event to bring neighbors closer together on the water, and it's a good excuse to fish,' Devney said.
Because the tournament is a Bay Crest community event, at least one resident of Bay Crest must be on each boat.
'It creates camaraderie and friendships within the neighborhood,' he said.
This year's tournament is in memoriam to Jerry Riski, a Bay Crest resident who recently passed away. Riski participated in past tournaments.
Participants must attend the Captain's Party at Fish Tales Bait and Tackle, 9026 W. Hillsborough Ave., at 7 p.m. Friday to receive the logistics of the tournament. Rules will be discussed. Anglers can begin fishing in Tampa Bay anytime Saturday, although start time is 6 a.m. But they must be at Fish Tales by 4 p.m. to report their catches.
Prizes will be given out for those with the largest snook, red fish and trout; largest total inches of snook, red fish and trout; and largest 'trash' fish, which includes catfish, jack or lady fish. Devney said there were 29 boats participating last year and he hopes to have 25 to 30 boats this year.
To register, contact Devney at (813) 267-2255.
