KEYSTONE - Thirty-two members of the Keystone Civic Association took to the streets Sept. 15 as part of the International Coastal Cleanup.
They brought in 1,300 pounds of trash in the form of tires, metal and plastic pipe, wire, scrap lumber and hubcaps, according to Greg Riski of the association, who has run the highway cleanups the past four years.
'We had a record crowd this year,' Riski said. 'My thought is the more this shows up in the news the more people will think about throwing trash out their windows.'
The volunteers met at the Keystone Community Center, 17928 Gunn Highway, and worked a 1 1/2 -mile-long section of Gunn Highway from Van Dyke Road to Tarpon Springs Road (plus half-mile east-west stretches of Van Dyke, Tarpon Springs, Mobley and Wayne Roads).
The cleanup went from 8 to 10 a.m.
'We do it early to avoid the heat and traffic congestion,' Riski said. 'We kept the kids on Wayne Road, mostly.'
Complimentary T-Shirts were provided by the nonprofit organization Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful, whose stated mission is to prevent litter, beautify the county and promote conservation and recycling.
The Keystone Civic Association hosts four such cleanups a year. Two of them, the International Coastal Cleanup in September and the Great American Cleanup in April, are associated with the Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful program.
The next Adopt-A-Road cleanup is scheduled Feb. 2.
