CITRUS PARK - County parks and recreation officials were hoping to get two dog parks in Logan Gate Village and Lutz completed by the end of the month, but work is taking longer than expected.
John Brill, a spokesman for the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department, said construction might last until mid-October.
'We're pretty close,' he said.
Brill estimated that the work for Logan Gate Park 3 is 90 percent complete and could be finished by Oct. 10.
Workers have finished fencing, installing seven dusk-to-dawn security lights, setting up two information kiosks, clearing brush, improving playground equipment and putting in more sidewalks, Brill said.
Items left to build include drinking fountains, four shady areas and six benches, he said.
In late 2005, residents pushed for renovations to the park off Monterey Boulevard after the strangled body of a 13-year-old boy was found in a secluded back area.
The other new dog park is being built at Carolyn Meeker Park off Lutz-Lake Fern Road and will replace an existing dog park at Lake Park.
Construction on the new Lutz dog park is about as far along as Logan Gate Park 3, Brill said.
Once construction is finished, ceremonies will be held for both parks' grand openings, but dates have not been selected, he said.
