CITRUS PARK - Logan Gate Village soon will have a new landscape company to maintain its common areas and spruce up its entrance.

At Monday's meeting, trustees from the neighborhood's special tax district voted unanimously to spend $17,000 per year for Natural Design to provide regular landscape maintenance. The contract is for three years.

The Lutz-based company's $17,000 bid was the lowest among five proposals. The highest was $39,000 per year.

The tax district's previous landscape maintenance contract cost $17,400 per year and was performed by a different company, which did not submit a bid this year.

The trustees also voted to accept Natural Design's $10,834 bid for a project to improve landscaping elements along Logan Gate Drive, which serves as an entrance into the neighborhood.

The trustees postponed until next month making a decision about which of two companies to hire to paint walls in the neighborhood. They want to talk with an expert about the proposals.

President Don Hardy asked the trustees whether they were willing to seek a grant from the Tampa Bay Estuary Program to further improve Trucious Pond, a retention pond within the neighborhood.

Currently, a homemade floating island sits on the pond's surface absorbing nutrients within the water to combat unsightly duckweed - tiny green floating plants that can spread across a pond's surface.

Hardy said a grant could provide about $5,600 to create 10 such floating islands and also install a wind-powered device that creates air bubbles, which could further combat the growth of duckweed.

The trustees agreed Hardy should pursue trying to obtain such a grant.
