TOWN 'N COUNTRY - A crowd of dignitaries and community leaders turned out recently to celebrate the grand opening of the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority's Northwest Transfer Center.

The center should be a boon for bus riders and those using alternative forms of transportation. Located near Waters Avenue and Sheldon Road on an 8.4-acre tract, the center has eight docking stations for buses and large shelters around a central building that will offer bus riders protection from the sun and rain.

There is a 93-space park-and-ride lot, restrooms, drinking fountains and a ticket-vending machine. The facility is near the Upper Tampa Bay Trail, making it convenient for bicycle riders and pedestrians.

The opening of the transfer center completes one of 10 goals in the Town 'N Country Community Plan. U.S. Rep Kathy Castor, who was involved with development of the plan when she served as county commissioner for this area, was among the guest speakers at the ceremony.

Also speaking were County Commissioner Rose Ferlita, who represents this area, and Mark Sharpe, who grew up in Town 'N Country and holds an at-large county commission seat.

Also attending was a variety of local citizens, many of whom were instrumental in developing the community plan.
