CARROLLWOOD - A new fitness course will provide exercise for teens thanks to the work of a Middleton High senior.
The course at the House of Hope Tampa Bay is simple in concept, but took months of planning and fundraising to get it built. The trail was conceived by student Marcus Steverson. The Carrollwood resident designed the trail to earn his Eagle Scout rank.
"I thought this would be a good way to help out the house," Steverson said. "I know this is something they could use."
The House of Hope is an organization that provides a home and education to teens unable to live at their family home. Because the teens live at the facility and receive their education there, they need a way to get their physical education on the grounds.
The jogging trail features strategically placed tires that challenge agility and speed. A horizontal ladder tests arm strength. The trail also contains a stretching station, pull-up bar and sit-up bench.
Steverson said he used skills from his Project Lead the Way program at Stewart Middle Magnet and from his engineering classes at Middleton High. He raised the money needed to build the trail by working with local businesses.
"Then myself and a couple other Scouts went out there and built the trail," he said. "They've already started using the trail. I just wanted to make a difference and give them a new outlet for exercise."
