TOWN 'N COUNTRY - A social worker at Leto High School won a state award for her work with homeless students.
The state Department of Education named Kathy Wiggins as the "Outstanding Florida Homeless Education Liaison" for her service during the past school year.
Wiggins had worked in the school district's Homeless Education and Literacy Project (HELP) office, which helps families with enrollment, attendance and academics and connects them to community resources and other district services.
She came to Leto this year and divides her days among the high school, Martinez Middle and Deer Park Elementary.
The Florida Homeless Education Awards recognize individuals and school districts for service to homeless youths in the 2007-08 school year. Other awards singled out homeless education programs, support services, and collaborative efforts with transportation offices and migrant education initiatives.
Awards were given at the Florida Migrant and Homeless Education State Conference this fall.
