'Wisdom' Enriches Seniors

Published: February 9, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY - Americans may be living longer these days, but not everyone is happy about it.
One hundred years ago, life expectancies were 48 years for men and 51 years for women. Now those numbers are 74 and 80, respectively.

Many people, young and older, consider those "golden years" as a time to be endured rather than celebrated.

Wrinkles, gray hair - or no hair - illness and infirmity come to mind rather than images of an active, rewarding, optimistic life.

"Wisdom of the Ages," a free visual and audio presentation this month at a community college art gallery, confronts such fears and negativity.

All the people featured are Floridians who are at least 85, and some are well past that.

Their stories show that seniors can continue to enrich their lives and communities through employment and volunteerism.

"Wisdom of the Ages" runs through Feb. 28 at Pasco-Hernando Community College's gallery in the Alric Pottberg Library on the West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road. The PHCC Foundation is sponsor.

Regular gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For private viewings or to schedule a group event, call (727) 816-3229.
