BAY CREST PARK - Actions by a community resource deputy to solve a safety issue have drawn praise from a community activist.
E. L. Jack Peel, a longtime Bay Crest Park resident, said the community of 937 single-family homes has had a problem with residents and their visitors blocking the sidewalks with their vehicles.
"Pedestrian traffic often had to go into the streets to pass by. This posed a problem and a danger for the elderly, the infirm, children on bikes and skateboards, mothers pushing heavy baby strollers, and others," Peel said, explaining that because the community has no parks or playgrounds, children often gather on the sidewalks to play games.
Repeated appeals in the community newsletter didn't do much good, Peel noted, so the District III sheriff's office was asked to help. Community Resources Deputy Gerry Stramiello made fliers and visited every home, leaving notices on doors advising that blocking a sidewalk is a violation, punishable by a $40 fine.
Peel said Stramiello's efforts are working - the sidewalks are clear.
