TOWN 'N COUNTRY - Although the Town 'N Country Regional Library moved in to its temporary location in June, it is still working on finishing touches.
Recently, the library named its bookstore. The name, Bargain Street Book Store, was chosen from a contest in August that solicited entries from the public.
Library staff members are looking for the person who came up with the name so they can award him or her with a $25 gift certificate to the bookstore.
The bookstore, 5455 W. Waters Ave., at the northeast corner of Waters and Anderson Road, is small but filled wall to wall with used and donated books on most every subject. The price for a paperback is 50 cents. Want a book on CD? That will be $1.50.
Because the store isn't manned on a consistent basis, most purchases are done on the honor system, said Carolyn Vallone, vice president of the Friends of the Town 'N Country Regional Library. If you want the book, you pay for it by placing your money in an envelope and inserting it into a locked box. The library trusts it will get the money in full.
Elvia Vera, principal librarian at Town 'N Country, said not as many people are visiting the temporary library. She hopes more will stop by and see what it has to offer.
"It's been good, but we're just not as busy as we were before," Vera said. "People couldn't find us. But little by little they're finding us.
"We'd love to have more kids coming, especially for children's programs."
The library offers movies for families at 3 p.m. the first Saturday of every month, Vera said. It also has book discussions every month, gardening programs and small business programs in English and Spanish.
The library also has laptops and holds computer classes. The staff plans to add gaming nights for teens visiting the library by providing games such as Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution.
These additions will be made as the staff awaits the opening of its new library at 7606 Paula Drive in late summer or early fall 2008. It will be part of the Town 'N Country Commons.
