Published: January 2, 2008

WESTCHASE - It's the time of year for new beginnings, and many vow to begin workout plans and eat healthy.

In hopes of helping many reach this goal, professionals at Snap Fitness, 12611 Race Track Road, were asked for advice on getting started on a healthy lifestyle. Three personal trainers shared their knowledge.

What is a misconception people have about sticking to a New Year's resolution?

That it's going to be easy. The problem with that is that it can be hard and it takes work. You have to want it bad enough to make it stick.

What is the first step to making an exercise-related resolution work?

Being consistent.

When should someone begin working on a resolution?

As soon as it pops into your mind you should start working on it. If you put it off, you are just setting yourself up for failure.

Why do you think so many people resolve to work out and make healthier choices, but then don't stick with it?

Everyone knows they can be healthier, whether by exercising, eating healthy or cutting out a bad habit. The problem is many don't have the proper guidance to do these things in a safe and effective way. They also get frustrated when they don't see results as quickly as they want.

Are there benefits to working with a personal trainer versus going it alone ?

Absolutely, but you should do a little background research before picking one. They should have experience, good education and a track record to prove it.

What about joining a gym?

There are definitely many advantages to joining a gym when it comes to exercise and reaching goals.

Do you have advice for someone hoping to make their resolution a part of their life?

My first tip would be to write out a plan with a specific goal. This game plan should consist of how you're going to accomplish your goal and time you want to do it in. My second tip would be that it should be your priority. You need to have a burning desire to accomplish your goal.

What should be included in a workout routine to establish a healthy life change?

To truly reap the benefits you should first have a proper nutrition plan, which consists of small, frequent meals, no starvation and no cutting meals or important food groups. You should also balance this out with three days of weight training and three days of cardio, with more of a focus on weight training.
