TOWN 'N COUNTRY - Members of the Harmony Metaphysical Church have a treat for anyone interested in learning what the new year has in store.
On Friday and Saturday, a New Year Prediction Fair will be held at the church, 2517 W. Henry Ave. The event has been held annually since 1962, the year the church opened.
There will be mediums, clairvoyants, Reiki healers and palmists at the fair. Although admission is free, the price for readings is $20 a session. Reiki healing is an ancient Japanese form of healing in which energy passes through the healer to the recipient.
The fair is a fundraiser for the church.
Harmony Metaphysical Church is a ministry based on spirituality, said the Rev. Donna Jeanne Guerra. The church doesn't have a specific doctrine other than love, she said.
"Only love is real; anything else is an illusion," she said.
The church was founded by the Revs. Isla Lippencott and Roberta Curtis, and it had 10 members when it opened. Today, the church has about 500 members and a consistent attendance of 150 for Sunday service, Guerra said.
Some members are in the ministerial program at the church, and they will be administering readings at the fair, Guerra said.
The fair also will have entertainment for children, including face painting and arts and crafts. Fairgoers who grow hungry can enjoy a $3 bowl of chili at the first Harmony Chili Cook Off.
Harmony holds a themed event every month, Guerra said. The compatibility fair is in February; March is about newness; and in October, the church holds a Halloween fair and costume party.
