TAMPA - St. Joseph's Women's Hospital has a new perk for new mothers: their baby's birth certificate before they check out.

The hospital is the first in Tampa Bay to provide the service and third in the state, according to a St. Joseph's news release. The service is provided out of a satellite office opened by the Department of Health's Office of Vital Statistics.

"This amenity is a benefit not only for those who have recently given birth at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital, but to anyone born in Florida after 1930 who needs a copy of their birth certificate for a school or U.S. passport application," the release stated.

Before St. Joseph's facility opened at 3030 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., mothers had the certificates mailed to them or visited the Office of Vital Statistics at 13601 N. 22nd St. in Tampa.

Hours of operation for the office are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office is closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. The first copy of the birth certificate is $14, and extra copies acquired along with the first are $9.

St. Joseph's Women's Hospital opened more than 30 years ago and is a 192-bed facility.
