KEYSTONE - Tom Aderhold, candidate for the Hillsborough County Commission District 2 seat, will hold a town hall lunch in Keystone Park today.

It's the first of what he says will be dozens of public meetings throughout the district leading up to the Republican primary Aug. 26, which will decide the race for the commission seat if no Democrat runs.
Aderhold is running against incumbent Ken Hagan.

The candidate said he plans to visit a different community about every two weeks, including Carrollwood, Northdale, Lutz and Citrus Park, to "demonstrate grass-roots, pro-community politics and, more importantly, to reconnect with the community."
Aderhold said he'll allow residents to bring up their own topics, but he plans to focus his talks on what he says would constitute major objectives during his first year on the job if elected, namely tax issues and transportation.

"We need a master plan on how to control future development," said the current president of the Keystone Civic Association, an organization that has locked horns with developers on numerous occasions.
Aderhold said the development community has "traditionally been resistant to anything but 'build, build, build.'"

"But the builders are scared right now," he continued. "I've had them tell me, 'We want a better way of doing things.' It doesn't have to be boom or bust. It can be moderated."

The meeting will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Complimentary hot dogs, chips and sodas will be offered.

The park is on the grounds of the Keystone Recreation Center, 17928 Gunn Highway.

The deadline for candidates to qualify to run for local office is Friday.

If no Democrat has filed by then, the Aug. 26 Republican primary will become a universal primary, open to all registered voters in District 2 to decide the seat on the county commission.
