TAMPA - The school board Thursday named a new principal for Westchase Elementary.
Scott Weaver, principal at Mabry Elementary in South Tampa since 2005, will begin his new duties Monday. He replaces Joyce Wieland, whom he also replaced at Mabry.
Wieland recently was named Hillsborough's general director of exceptional student education.
At a Mabry PTA meeting Thursday night, Weaver told parents the Westchase position is "very sought after."
Before taking over at Mabry at age 33, Weaver taught at Tampa Bay Boulevard Elementary and was assistant principal at Bryant Elementary. He started the Dads Club at Bryant and launched an in-school math academy for fourth- and fifth-graders at Pride Elementary. He developed similar programs at other schools in his next job as a resource teacher.
Weaver grew up in New Jersey and joined the Air Force after high school. He spent time at MacDill Air Force Base and the last of his four years of service in Alaska, providing weather briefings to fighter pilots.
He received his bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida in 1997 and a master's in educational leadership from Saint Leo College in 2001.
