Barbershop Goes In Style

Published: September 24, 2008

TOWN 'N COUNTRY - What started as a small neighborhood barbershop in 1973 continues to evolve.

Last year, Fernando's Barbershop, 7530 W. Waters Ave., was featured in an article in the Northwest News & Tribune. The story noted that owner Fernando Santamaria Jr., who learned his trade from his dad and took over the shop in 1997, had developed loyal customers by blending the old-school-barbershop style with a contemporary modern-salon atmosphere. The shop featured straight-razor shaves, and Santamaria was named one of the top five barbers in the United States by Classic Style magazine.

Now, Santamaria has taken it one step further, moving into new quarters at 5323 Kelly Road and changing the name to Shades and Shaves. The new facility targets both men and women, under the same roof, but with separate areas - and atmospheres.

"Female clients enjoy a clean, elegant, chic, modern and fashionable feel ... in the women's side," he said in a recent e-mail, adding that staffers are experts at hair coloring. "Our men's grooming department offers male clients isolation from the women, a male-friendly atmosphere and services such as: haircuts, hot lather and hot towel shaves, shoe shine, the latest in men's grooming and shaving products and accessories."

Men and women are offered complimentary tea or coffee in the mornings or a cocktail in the afternoons.
Santamaria hopes to start a chain of similar operations in the future.
