CARROLLWOOD - Art lovers can start 2009 checking out a local artist in a new show at the Carrollwood Cultural Center.

Brandon artist Candace Knapp will be displaying one of her installations featuring sound at the center through the end of the month

Knapp said she is celebrating life by "making sculptures, paintings, music, installations and anything else I can get my hands on."

She has earned degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Art and the University of Illinois.

Last November, Knapp had an installation with sound at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, Harris House Gallery. In 2007, she was invited to show 11 of her works at the Miaoli Wood Sculpture Museum in Sanyi, Taiwan.

She also has done several public art pieces in Tampa and St. Petersburg and made her living through sculpture for about 30 years.

Before her full-time pursuit of art, Knapp designed furniture and carved statues for churches.

The cultural center is at 4537 Lowell Road. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lennie Freeman will also show her drawings and paintings through Jan. 15.

There will be a reception for the artists at the center from 7 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 14. For information, call (813) 269-1310.
