TAMPA - Sickles High senior point guard Jordan Davis may be the best player in Hillsborough County.
Ranked by ESPN as the fifth-best point guard in the state and 99th in the nation, Davis is entering his fourth varsity season as the starting point guard for the four-time defending district champions.
Sickles head coach Renaldo Garcia said Savannah State University, Stetson University, College of Charleston and Ohio University are among the schools that have shown interest in the 5-foot-11 guard. Davis earned the interest of college scouts as a star player on the Amateur Athletic Union circuit the past two summers as the starting point guard for Florida Elite, one of the top summer clubs in the state.
As a junior, Davis led Hillsborough County in assists with 7.4 per game and was the team's second-leading scorer with 8.2 points per game, behind John Henson, who now plays at the University of North Carolina.
"He should have a good year," Garcia said.
With rising junior and 6-3 guard Rashawn Rembert joining Davis in the backcourt, Sickles should again be one of the top teams in the county this season.
Other area teams
ALONSO: The Ravens had one of the worst seasons in program history last year, finishing 2-22 overall and 0-10 in district play. In its defense, Alonso had just two seniors on the roster. Last year, rising senior Caleb Kamm was the team's second-leading scorer with 10.8 points per game.
CHAMBERLAIN: After 31 years as head coach, Doug Aplin resigned from the boys basketball coaching position, ending one of the most prolific coaching careers in Hillsborough County history. Aplin, 55, compiled a 516-276 career record at Chamberlain and guided the program to three state final four appearances in 1989, 1990, and 2006. Under new coach, Christopher Snyder, Chamberlain returns rising junior Eric Storts and senior Mike Julien.
GAITHER: The Cowboys are coming off a bad season after going 2-19 last year. The good news for head coach Dwayne Olinger is that he returns five upperclassmen from last year's team.
LETO: Leto finished 3-19 last season, with its three wins against Alonso, Gaither and Jefferson. Jeff Watson, who led the team with 10 points per game, graduated.
STEINBRENNER: Former Blake High athletic director Steve Williams was hired during the summer to coach the first-year program, which will be paired with Blake, Jefferson, Robinson, Lennard, Strawberry Crest, Jesuit, Spoto and Middleton in Class 4A-District 9.
