TAMPA - An early morning fire at a Northdale home left a pet dead and some family members treated for smoke inhalation.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials said residents of the home were fortunate to have escaped relatively uninjured, as smoke alarms had dead batteries and were inoperable.
The alarm at 1:08 a.m. today sent firefighters to the home at 4201 N. Wind Lane. The fire originated in the bedroom of a 14-year-old boy, officials said. While the fire's origin was undetermined this morning, it was believed to have been accidental, officials said.
One of three family cats was killed; two were found alive.
The home's occupants, who were not immediately identified, were treated for smoke inhalation, but no one was hospitalized.
Four fire engines, an ambulance and 16 firefighters were dispatched. Neighbors said they would assist the family with lodging and other needs.
