WESTCHASE - Leaders for Westchase want to make their community parks more accessible to children with disabilities.

The members of the Community Development District are considering adding special swings that are handicap accessible. The move comes at the request of parents of physically challenged children in the community. They recently addressed CDD board members and presented a petition with 137 resident signatures.

The parents are suggesting the installation of a swing similar to the JennSwing, which is a full-bodied swing. The device allows any child to use it despite physical or mental challenges.

The swing features a reclined plastic seat with harness and can be used by children of all abilities and ages. The swing retails for about $500.
Board members have asked staff to look into the cost of purchasing and installing the special swing into two of its parks, Baybridge and Glencliff.

"I think we all want to be able to put the swing in," said board member Ernie Sylvester. "I'm sure we can find the funds."

Other local parks have installed the swings including Freedom Playground at MacFarlane Park. The board is expected to consider the issue at the November CDD meeting.
