WESTCHASE - An Irish-themed restaurant and bar is coming to the area despite protests from nearby residents.
The Hillsborough County zoning board approved the rezoning of the property in the Avenues of Westchase. The rezoning allows the establishment to sell liquor in addition to beer and wine, which had been sold in other previous businesses in that location.
Many residents spoke against the rezoning request, claiming liquor sales would just intensify an ongoing problem. Several other businesses already sell beer and wine in the area, which is along Linebaugh Avenue and across from Westchase Elementary.
Residents said that has led to a host of late night problems including loitering, littering, loud music and public urination.
"We're not against a family-centered restaurant," said Westchase resident Karen Nelson at a recent meeting. "But why do you need to sell liquor to be a family-centered place?"
Many residents spoke in support of the business, saying Westchase needs more places where families can gather.
An opening date has not been given.
